The 2010-2011 Varsity Boys’ Basketball Team at United Faith Christian Academy was once again one of the best teams in the country as evidenced by the fact they won the Classic I Bracket of the Chick-fil-A Classic and finished second at the Glaxo Smith Kline Holiday Invitational. The Falcons finished the year ranked nationally with a 31-7 record. Their marquee victory of the season came with a 1-point win over the nation’s #1 ranked team (Oak Hill Academy) at the Greensboro Coliseum in February. In April, UFCA was chosen to play in the ESPN RISE national invitational tournament that included 7 others of the best teams in the nation. The Falcons were led by a trio of Division I prospects that included senior Paris Roberts-Cambell (who signed with East Carolina), junior Braxton Ogbueze (now committed to Florida), and junior Peter Jurkin (committed to Indiana). With the return of Ogbueze and Jurkin for their senior year, UFCA expects to again be one of the top teams in the country. United Faith is coached by Muggsy Bogues. Coach Bogues is entering his first season at the helm of the Falcons. He had a standout career at Wake Forest University before embarking on a 14 year career in the NBA. He has been selected as one of the 50 players of all-time in the ACC.

Braxton Ogbueze
Braxton is a 6’0 nationally ranked senior point guard who averaged 18 points and 4 assists per game during the 2010-2011 campaign. Braxton is a lightning quick point guard who has the ability to blow by defenders. During the 2010-2011 campaign, he was selected All-Conference, Conference Player of the Year, and All-State. ESPN rates Braxton as the nation’s #6 point guard in the Class of 2012. Braxton has committed verbally to attend the University of Florida next year and play for the Gators.

The Oak Hill Warriors finished their 2010-2011 season with a record of 29-4, ranked #4 nationally in USA Today and #7 by ESPN. The Warriors play arguably the toughest schedule in high school basketball defeating 8 nationally ranked teams throughout the season as well as multiple state champions across the country. They were tournament champs of the prestigious Iolani Prep Classic in Hawaii defeating Montverde Academy (FL) in the finals during the Christmas holiday. Senior point guard Quinn Cook was the 27th Oak Hill player to be named to the McDonald’s AA game. Coach Smith reached his 800th career win during the month of December (his overall record is 816-53). Three OHA seniors signed with Division 1 schools: Quinn Cook-Duke, Daniel Gomis-Oregon State, and Keith Hornsby-UNC Asheville. The Warriors have several underclassmen returning with quality playing time and experience in Jordan Adams, Damien Wilson, and big man AJ Hammons. Coach Smith has several top players transferring in for the upcoming 2011-12 season to bolster the roster and expects to compete for another national title. Over Coach Smith’s tenure, the Warriors have won 7 mythical national championships (1993, 1994, 1999, 2011, 2004, 2005, 2007), and they have been runners-up 6 times (1990, 1992, 2000, 2002, 2006, 2009). Over his twenty-six years with Oak Hill, Coach Smith has put over 130 players in Division 1 colleges/universities (including 2010 NCAA Champion Nolan Smith), and has coached over twenty Warriors that have played in the NBA---most notably Carmelo Anthony, Rajon Rondo, Kevin Durant, Josh Smith, Brandon Jennings, Ty Lawson, Stephen Jackson, Steve Blake, Mike Beasley, Sagana Diop.

SPOTLIGHT PLAYER
Jordan Adams
Jordan is a 6’5 nationally ranked senior wing player who averaged 16 points, 7.1 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game during the 2010-2011 basketball season. He led the Warriors with the highest rebound average and free throw percentage (90%). Jordan is an outstanding perimeter player who has the ability to use his body to get to the rim to make plays. He has verbally committed to attend and play basketball for UCLA next year.

The Christ School basketball team successfully defended their NCISAA 3A State Championship by defeating Charlotte Christian School 59-57 in the title game. The Greenies finished the 2010-2011 season with a record of 32-5, with all 5 losses coming to nationally ranked teams. Christ School ended the season ranked #39 in the ESPN Fab 50 poll. Although the Greenies were led by 3 Division I seniors, there are 4 key returning letterman. They include seniors Will Weeks, Zach Korkowski, Andy McMillan, and Spenser Dalton. Senior guard Jerome Hairston joins the Greenies this year. Also new to Christ School are talented juniors Jaylen Allen and Shannon Hale. Sophomore guards Eric Johnson and Josh Level will be key components to the Greenies this year. Christ School will again play a challenging schedule participating in both the Chick-fil-A Classic and Arby’s Classic Tournaments to prepare them for their ultimate goal, which is to compete for another State Championship. Head Coach David Gaines (352-74) has completed his 13th season of coaching, all with his alma mater Christ School, and was named the 2011 Asheville Citizen-Times Boys Basketball Coach of the Year. The Greenies will have 13 players at NCAA Division I schools this season. Christ School has won 5 of the last 6 NCISAA 3A State Championships.

SPOTLIGHT PLAYER
Shannon Hale
Shannon Hale, a 6’8 junior forward, has already made a verbal commit to the University of Alabama. Last year at Science Hill HS (TN), Shannon was named to the All Big 8 Conference team and TN All State team, along with being named the sophomore player of the year. Shannon is a skilled athlete who can score both inside and out. Last year he averaged 15.9 points per game and 8.5 rebounds per game. Shannon is a defensive force at the forward position.

The 2010-11 La Verne Lutheran Trojans finished an emotional rollercoaster of a season with its second California State Championship in consecutive years. The Trojans started the school year with three deaths of individuals close to the basketball family. The team took the biggest blow of all when 6'8" senior forward, Xavier Jones, collapsed at preseason practice of a heart condition. The team rebounded to end the season with its back to back state championships. The Trojans lose three seniors that received basketball scholarships in 2011, but will still have a strong 2011-12 team lead by 6'9" senior forward Grant Jerrett who is ranked as a top ten player in most national publications. Jerrett, a University of Arizona committee will be will joined with junior point guard Eric Cooper Jr. (also committed to U of A) to lead the potent Trojan attack. Senior guard Cameron Osorno and junior forward McKay Anderson round out a Trojan team that returns 9 letterman. The Trojans are guided by Coach Eric Cooper Sr. who was 2011 California State Basketball Coach of the Year. In his four seasons at the helm, Coach Cooper has put together an outstanding resume with a career record of 110 wins and 21 losses. He played college basketball at the University of Arizona and has also coached professionally in the WNBA and ABA leagues.

Grant Jerrett
Grant is a 6’9” senior forward who averaged 18 points, 10 rebounds and 4 blocks per game this past year. He was selected to the 1st Team All-State team this past year as a junior. Grant is ranked in the top ten of most national basketball publications. Jerrett is verbally committed to attend the University of Arizona.

Westtown finished last season with a final record of 17-10. The team won the Bullis School Christmas Tournament and the Trenton Catholic Blue Division Christmas Tournament. Westtown made its league playoffs for the 3rd year in a row, losing to eventual champion Friends Central School. The team returns 3 starters and has an incoming senior transfer who is expected to start. Westtown is coached by Seth Berger. He has been the varsity boys coach for 4 years and the team has a 65-34 record in that period. Two alumni are currently playing D1 ball as freshman at Brown and Bryant Universities along with a graduating senior is also headed to Brown to play. Rising senior Daniel Ochefu (6’10) has verbally committed to Villanova University.

Daniel Ochefu
Daniel is a 6’10, 245 pounds senior post player who has committed to play for Villanova University next year. During his junior campaign, Daniel averaged 16 points and 12 rebounds per game. He has been first team All-League in each of his first three years, and was third team All-State this past year. Daniel has been nationally ranked within the nation’s Top 20 each of the last two years. This past year Daniel was recognized by Sports Illustrated as the High School Player of the Week (February 9, 2011).

Columbia High School is coming off of another stellar campaign in which they captured their second consecutive Georgia Class AAA State Championship as they finished the season nationally ranked with a record of 30 wins and only 3 losses. This past year’s championship makes 4 titles in the last 6 years. Columbia has advanced in the playoffs to the “Final Four” each of the past 6 years. Over that span the Eagles have a combined record of 180-17 making them the winningest high school program in the state of Georgia since the 2005-2006 season. The 2011-2012 team looks to again challenge for the state championship. The Eagles returns 4 starters and 9 lettermen including top prospects Tahj Shamsid-Deen (5'10 PG), Jarmal Reid (6'6 SF/PF), Jaustin Thomas (6'7 PF/C) and Damian Goodwin (6 ’7 PF/C). Columbia is coached by Phil McCrary. During his career, over 25 former Eagles have gone on to play college basketball. Current College Stars/NBA hopefuls Travis Leslie (UGA), Jeremy Price (UGA), and Darius Morrow (East Carolina), Amu Saaka (Furman) all have donned the royal blue and orange jerseys. Other famous school alumni include actor Chris Tucker and platinum recording artist B.O.B.

Tahj Shamsid-Deen
Tahj Shamsid-Deen is a 5'10 junior point guard for the Columbia Eagles. Tahj, "The 50 year old midget" as dubbed by his head coach, is well beyond his years when it comes to his maturity level on the court. After leading his team to back to back state championships in his freshman and sophomore years it is evident that he is a proven winner. Tahj has started every game of his career at Columbia and in that span the Eagles have amassed a record of 58-8. This past year he averaged 15ppg, 8.8apg, and 3spg, while shooting 57% from the field and over 60% from behind the arc. Those stats earned him the Class AAA player of the year, first team all-metro, and first team all-state honors. His maturity and knack for winning has made him a very valuable college recruit in spite of his small stature.

The Panthers of Paul VI Catholic High School finished their season with an overall record of 21 wins and 11 losses. The Panthers finished 3rd in the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (WCAC) which is considered one of the best conferences in the nation. Paul VI advanced to the tournament semi-finals before losing by 3 points to the eventual champion DeMatha High School. Paul VI returns all five starters from last year’s team along with 5 of their top 6 reserves. Senior Co-MVP’s Patrick Holloway (16 pts, 1st Team All-State, 1st team All WACA) and 6’6 Coleman Johnson (12 pts, 8 reb) lead a starting unit who has started over 50 games together. Defensive Player of the Year Tilman Dunbar leads the team in assists and steals while junior wings Stanford Robinson (ranked in top 50 in multiple national publications) and Jamall Robinson will be counted on to contribute to the balanced attack that PVI is known for. The Panthers are coached by Glenn Farello. Coach Farello is beginning his fifth season as the head coach at Paul VI and his 14th overall as a head coach. He has an overall record of 231 wins and 125 losses and has been named Coach of the Year six times. Coach Farello has coached over 40 players that have played college basketball and 10 that have played professional basketball including two NBA players, Delonte West (Cavaliers) and Eddie Basden (Bulls).

Stan Robinson
Stan is a 6’4 nationally ranked junior wing player who averaged 13 points, 8 rebounds and 3 assists during the 2010-2011 campaign. He was named 2nd Team All WCAC and 2nd Team All-State as a sophomore. Stan recorded 14 double-double games during the season including a 27 point, 16 rebound game.

The Panthers of Southwest DeKalb High School completed their season this past year with an overall record of 24 wins and 6 losses that included a holiday invitational and a region tournament title. Southwest DeKalb upset nationally ranked Miller Grove by a score of 61-56 to claim the Region 6AAAA tournament championship this past February. With the return of 4 starters that include 1st Team All-State performers Shaq Goodwin and Jordan Price, the Panthers are looking forward to making a deep run in this year’s playoffs. Southwest DeKalb is coached by Dwayne McKinney. In his first year at the helm this past season, Coach McKinney led the Panthers to the state playoffs for the first time since 2006.

Shaq Goodwin
Shaq is a 6’8 230-pound nationally ranked power forward who averaged a double-double this past season with 18 points and 10 rebounds to go along with 3.9 blocks per game while shooting a blistering 66.0 percent from the floor. He was named All-Region and 1st Team All-State this past year. Shaq is being recruited by numerous high major Division I schools.

The 2010-2011 basketball season was another successful season for the Word of God Christian Academy Holy Rams. The Holy Rams were 24-3 and lost in the state semifinals. The 2011-2012 Holy Rams return one starter in dynamic junior guard Josh Newkirk, Newkirk averaged 15 points and 8 assists per game for a very talented team. Newkirk host offers from NC State, Arizona, Oklahoma State, Indiana and App. State. The Holy Rams also return 6th man Camden Scott who should be poised for a big year. Word of God also has some key transfers in sophomore Jaylan Robertson, junior Dewayne Miner, and junior Stavian Allen. Robertson has the ability to be a big time recruit, while Miner and Allen are big time sleepers in the 2013 class. The Holy Rams will be coached by Randy Pulley who is in his first year at his alma mater after being a college assistant for the last three years.

Josh Newkirk
Josh is a 6’3 nationally ranked junior guard who averaged 15 points and 8 assists per game as a sophomore. Rivals have him listed in the top 75 nationally for the Class of 2013. He already has offers from High Major D1 schools Indiana, Oklahoma State, Arizona, and NC State. Other schools showing interest include UNC, Miami, Tennessee, and Memphis.

The 2010-2011 West Charlotte Lions finished as one of the most successful teams in school history. They completed their season with an overall record of 28-2 while on their way to capturing the NCHSAA 4-A State Championship. Due to the Lions success they were ranked 49th nationally by ESPN. This ranking was the highest the school has had in twelve years. The 2011-2012 Lions will again be among the favorites to capture the 4-A championship in North Carolina. As many as thirteen players will return and will be led by 6-8 junior Kennedy Meeks. Two other returning starters 6-4 senior Michael Brown and 6-6 Senior Juwan Byers will be there to anchor a very defensive minded team. Returning on the sidelines for his fourth season with the Lions will be Coach Baronton Terry. Terry who is a Washington DC native has amassed a record of 66-23 during this time. Prior to his time in Charlotte Coach Terry enjoyed success as the Head coach of Northwestern High School in Miami Florida.

Kennedy Meeks
Kennedy Meeks is a rising junior, ranked 15th in the 2013 class by Rivals, ESPN and Scout.com. Kennedy made a name for himself by leading the West Charlotte Lions to their first state championship in 12 years. The 6”8 junior was named MVP after scoring 22 points, 21 rebounds and 8 blocked shots in the regional championship game. Meeks has been offered scholarships by Miami, NC State, South Carolina, Maryland, Georgetown, Wake Forest, Xavier and Virginia Tech.

The Ridge View Blazers are coming off their most successful season in school history by going 20-8 and finishing as South Carolina’s 4A Lower State Champions by winning 10 of their last 11 games. The Blazers made the state title game last year by winning on the road four straight games over teams that had over 20 wins. Last year the Blazers won two invitational tournaments for the first time in school history, BI-LO Holiday Classic & Columbia Preseason Challenge. Ridge View traditionally plays and excitingly tough schedule with games against Oak Hill Academy, Christ School, and two years ago they played in Madison Square Garden. This year the Blazers will face a challenge to continue the program’s excellence because they return only 4 lettermen from last year’s team. Head Coach John Combs is entering his 7th season at Ridge View (8th overall) with a career coaching record of 106-77.

Ismail Howard
Ismail is a 6’2 senior guard who was a valuable part of our 2011 run to a Lower State Championship. He makes very few mental mistakes on the court. Ismail participated in all of the 28 of the Blazers games last year and figures to one of major scorers for the team this year.

After a slow start to the season, the Diamond Hornets hit their stride at the beginning of conference play and went on to another highly successful season by finishing the year with an overall record of 18 wins and 11 losses while advancing to the Class 3A Final Four for the second year in a row. Lower Richland won the region championship in Region IV 3A for the third consecutive year. Lower Richland has a rich history of basketball success including four Class AAAA State Championships (1982, 1987, 1988, and 1999). With the return of 4 starters from last year’s team, the Diamond Hornets are primed for another successful season. Lower Richland is again expected to be led by returnees Eric Eaves, Kenneth McFadden, Ed Stevens, and Vincent Hickland. Lower Richland is coached by Ezekiel “Zeke” Washington who is beginning his fifth year at the helm of the Diamond Hornets. Coach Washington has an overall head coaching record of 309 wins and 145 losses.

The Richland Northeast Cavaliers finished last season with a 17-10 overall record after finishing runner up in tough region IV 4A and losing in the second round of the 4A state playoffs. Nine lettermen return from last year's team along with 4 starters. The Cavaliers are expected to be led by All-Region performers Travis Hammonds and Quinn Martin along with fellow lettermen Mike Murphy, Kelvin Cruse, Ziar Anderson, Devante Anderson, and Arthur Whaley. Year in and year out the Cavaliers play one of the toughest schedules in the state and last season defeated 3 of the State Championship participants. In order to reach the next level, this team is going to need to have better consistency in its play, and have more of a desire to win and finish games. Coach Jason Powell is entering his 11th season as Head Coach and 18th overall in coaching high school basketball (17 of those at RNE). As a Head Coach, Powell's teams have averaged 17 wins a season and are consistent contenders for competing for the State Championship.

Travis Hammonds
Travis has become one of the best outside shooters to ever play at Richland Northeast. Last season he made 68 3's (two shy of the school record for 3's in a season) and shot 43% from the 3pt line. In addition to that, Travis led the Cavaliers for the second season in a row in rebounding with a total of 214 rebounds (one shy of the school record for rebounds in a season). Travis is being recruited by many low to mid-major D1 schools.

The Raiders capped off their second consecutive SCHSL Class 2A State Championship with a 56-50 victory over Mullins High School. The Raiders completed their season with an overall record of 26 wins and 3 losses that included capturing their 10th Region Championship in the last 12 years. The Raiders also finished as Runners-Up in the Chick-fil-A Classic Bracket I Championship losing to nationally ranked United Faith Christian Academy (NC) in the championship game. The Raiders return 4 starters and 5 other lettermen from last year’s state championship team. The team will be led by All-Region and All-Area performers Quinton Johnson and Marcus Stroman. W.J. Keenan is coached by Zach Norris. Coach Norris is entering his 13th season as the head coach of the Raiders and 22nd season as a head coach. His career coaching record stands at 466 wins and 149 losses. The Raiders are again expecting to have another highly successful season and a return to the state playoffs for the thirteenth consecutive year.

Quinton Johnson
Quinton is a 6’5 senior forward who averaged 13.3 points, 10.6 rebounds, and 3.8 blocks per game last season. He was selected as an All-Region and All-Area performer in addition to being named to the Chick-fil-A Classic All-Tournament Team. Quinton is being recruited by Clemson, East Carolina, Presbyterian, Jacksonville and Garner Webb.

The Vikings of Spring Valley High School finished the 2010-2011 campaign with an overall record of 14 wins and 9 losses. The Vikings attended the Bluffton Classic and finished as Tournament Runner-Up. Spring Valley returns 3 starters from last year’s team and has an influx of young talent. The Vikings are an exciting team to watch as they get up and down the court on both offense and defense. Spring Valley is coached by Perry Dozier. Perry and his twin brother Terry were stand out players for the University of South Carolina basketball team in the 1980’s.

Dee is a 5’10 senior guard who averaged 12 points and 4 assists per game during the 2010-2011 campaign. He is an excellent free throw shooter (81%) and was named to the All-Region team. Devante is a team captain.

The 2009-2010 basketball campaign for Wilson High School was a very successful one. The Tigers finished the season with a 23-4 record. Wilson won the Region VIII – 3A Championship and advanced to the quarterfinals of the SC State Championship Tournament and finished the season as the 4th ranked Class 3A team in South Carolina. The Tigers return 4 of their 5 starters from last season and 9 of their 14 lettermen. Leading the way for Wilson will be All-Region players Brandon Jones (6’6 SF SR.) and Jared Charles (5’10 PG/SG SR.). Wilson will also be expecting a big contribution from last year’s sixth man Alandre Davis (6’8 PF SR.) The Tigers are coached by DeAndre Scott an alumnus of Wilson High School. Coach Scott has compiled an overall record of 172-93 in his 10 years as a head coach in South Carolina.

Brandon Jones
Brandon Jones is a 6’6 small forward. Brandon averaged 13 points, 7 rebounds and 2 assist per game last season. Brandon was named All Region and to the Pee Dee Area Hoopzone team. Brandon is being recruited by several D-1 Basketball Programs.
