Game 21 Summary
By Gerald Davis
COLUMBIA _ Chris Brown and the Dreher Blue Devils wanted to make a point in their final game of the Chick-fil-A Classic Tuesday.
“We had to win,” said Brown, who scored a game-high 25 points in a 63-56 win against Fairfield Central. “We worked too hard for this. We were coming off a bad game last night against Christ School, even though we played hard.”
And it took the Blue Devils, who finished third in the Classic II bracket with the win, some time to get going. They trailed 26-7 with four minutes remaining in the first half, but trimmed the margin to 29-23 at halftime.
That’s when Brown and Quayshun Hawkins began to roll. Brown made four of his five 3-pointers in the second half and Hawkins finished with 14 points overall for the Blue Devils.
“I think they came alive in the final four minutes of the first half,” said Dreher coach Jon Richards, whose team improved to 12-2. “We started playing our game, which is transition, pressure.”
Brown agreed.
“We started off slow,” he said. “But then coach gave us a little motivational talk and we started playing.”
Fairfield Central, which fell to 7-4, was led by Mikell Trapp, who finished with 18 points.
