The Wildcats

The Lexington Wildcats are a perennial force in class AAAA basketball in South Carolina. In the past 24 years under Coach Bailey Harris, they have won 10 region titles, been to 8 final fours and won 2 state titles along with 3 state runner-up finishes. Lexington is coming off a 24-6 season with 12 of 13 players and all starters set to return. Led by two-time all-state performer Shaq Roland and all region combo guard Joby Glymph the Wildcats are a veteran bunch with depth on the floor. Sam McDermott, Brandon Adams and Trae Carson are all 3rd year contributors on this year’s squad. Lexington’s schedule will be challenging, highlighted by 2 games with rival and defending state champ Irmo as well as a trip to the Beach Ball Classic.  

SPOTLIGHT PLAYER

Shaq Roland

Shaq is a 6’2 senior guard who averaged 19 points and 6.5 rebounds per game during the 2010-2011 campaign. Shaq has been a starter since his 9th grade year. He earned All-Region and All-State recognition after both his sophomore and junior seasons. He scored his 1,000th career point last year during only his 63rd varsity game. Shaq has helped lead his team to 3 consecutive region titles and 71 wins in the past 3 seasons. Shaq is a major college prospect in both football and basketball.

The Cardinals

Cardinal Newman High School

Cardinal Newman High School had a great 2010-11 season finishing with an overall record of 26-4 that included a tie for 1st place in their conference with a 7-1 mark. The Cardinals finished their season with a loss in the SCISA Class 3A quarter-finals to Wilson Hall by a score of 46-42. With the return of 3 starters and 10 lettermen, the prospects for 2011-2012 are again bright. The Cardinals are expected to be led again by 6’6 junior shooting guard Austin Aujkwa. Daulton Halfacre, a 6’2 rising senior point guard, will also be expected to contribute greatly to the team’s success. The Cardinals are coached by Kevin Rose. Coach Rose will be returning for his 6th season at the helm with 96-50 overall record. Coach Rose has been named coach of the year three out of his six seasons at the school. In its history, Cardinal Newman has won 10 State Championships. Famous alumni include Grady Wallace who was a former South Carolina Gamecock great and Coach at Cardinal Newman.
 

SPOTLIGHT PLAYER

Austin Aujkwa

Austin Aujkwa is a 6’6 rising junior shooting guard is being recruited by both South Carolina & Clemson. He averaged 20 points, 7 rebounds, 3 steals and 3 assist a game will be getting a lot attention in 2011-12 season. During the 2010-11 Season Austin was named to the Military Magnet and Carolina Day Holiday Classic All-Tournament teams. Austin was all also selected as all-region player, all-area player, and to North-South All-star Game for 2010-2011 season.

The Panthers

The 2010-11 Pinewood Prep Panther basketball team went 22-11 and finished 6-2 in region play to claim the region title. The Panthers string of five consecutive state championships was stopped by a loss in the state semi-final game. The 22 win season marked the 17th straight 20 win campaign for the program. Pinewood returns its two leading scorers from last year, Keith Pinckney (14.4) and Jerome Deas (13.7). Senior Michael Pendley at 6’ 5” and 260 lbs. will be a force at center. He is also a top football prospect. The Panthers are hopeful of a great 2011-12 season. Coach Pat Eidson enters the season just 6 games shy of his 700th win with a career record of 694 wins and 276 losses. Pinewood has won 8 state championships and 5 state runner-ups in Eidson’s 21 years at the school. Milton Jennings who is currently at Clemson and Chuck Eidson (USC) who is playing in Europe are two of Pinewood’s most notable players.
 

SPOTLIGHT PLAYER

Jerome Deas

Jerome Deas, a two year starter returns for his senior year to lead the Panthers. Deas, a 6’2, 195 pound sharpshooter averaged 13.8 points as a sophomore to help lead Pinewood to a state championship in 2009-10. As a junior, Deas was SCISA all-state and was selected to the All-region team. He was selected to the Charleston Post and Courier All-Lowcountry second team as well as being named to the High School Sports Report All-state team.

The Cougars

Edisto High School

The Cougars of Edisto High School finished the season 12-10 after losing in the first round of the playoffs. The Cougars return 2 starters and 3 other letterman from last year’s team. The team will be led by All-State and All Region performer Brice Johnson. The Edisto Cougars are coached by Herman Johnson. Coach Johnson is entering his 22nd season as head coach of the Cougars. His career coaching record stands at 230 wins and 134 losses. If the Cougars are to be successful, developing point guard play and some quality depth will be imperative to have a successful season.
 

SPOTLIGHT PLAYER

Brice Johnson

Brice Johnson is a 6'9 nationally ranked senior forward/center from the class of 2012. He is very athletic with a high basketball I.Q. During the 2010-2011 campaign, Brice averaged 23.3 points, 12.0 rebounds, and 7.0 blocks per game. He was named the Gatorade Player of the Year, Times and Democrat Player of the Year. He also made All-State, All-Region, and All-Area. Brice is being recruited by Florida, Clemson, South Carolina, Wake Forest, Ohio State, Georgia Southern, Virginia Tech, Miami, North Carolina and several other High Major Division One Schools. The Eagles

Upper Room Christian Academy, in only its 3rd year of having a varsity program, has quickly established itself as a program on the rise nationally. With only two seniors and a roster full of Juniors and Sophomores, look for URCA to be a force in high school basketball for years to come. The team will be led again by 6’3 senior point guard Rodney Purvis, 6’8 junior power forward Tyrek Coger (Committed to Missouri), and 6’7 center Sharwyn McGee. The War Eagles are coached by Avie Lester who is also the school’s athletic director. Coach Lester played for the late great Jim Valvano at NC State University. He played on the 1987 ACC Tournament and 1989 regular season championship teams for the Wolfpack before playing professionally in Europe. Coach Lester is beginning his 9th year as the head coach of URCA.
 

SPOTLIGHT PLAYER

Rodney Purvis

Rodney is a 6’4 nationally ranked guard who averaged 25 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists per game for the Eagles during the 2010-2011 basketball campaign. He can play both guard positions equally as well. He is a high-level scorer who also has terrific vision for finding the open man. Rodney’s end to end court speed is what separates him from most other guards. He is an outstanding finisher near the rim.
