The Monarchs of Archbishop Mitty finished the 2005-2006 basketball season with a final record of 29 wins and 5 losses. The Monarchs won the West Catholic Athletic League (WCAL) Round Robin and Tournament Championships before falling in the California Division II State Semi-Finals. Archbishop Mitty returns three All-WCAL starters along with 5 other lettermen from last year’s Final Four team. The returning starters are Collin Chiverton (Jr), Drew Gordon (Jr), and Kevin Toth (Sr). The Monarchs are coached by Brian Eagleson who is entering his eighth season as head coach of the Monarchs. Coach Eagleson is a 1992 graduate of Archbishop Mitty. Under his leadership, the Monarchs have been to four straight sectional finals and five in seven years while reaching the Northern California finals twice. Archbishop Mitty has a record of 106 wins and 24 losses over the last four years.

Drew is a 6’9 junior forward/center who averaged 16 points and 12 rebounds per game during the 2005-2006 basketball season. He was selected to the West Catholic Athletic League All-State team and is a nationally ranked top 10 junior player.

In 2005-2006, the Panthers of Horizon High School won the California Division IV State Championship with an overall record of 26 wins and 3 losses. Horizon defeated nationally ranked San Joaquin Memorial in the championship game for their third title in the last 5 years. The Panthers have won twelve straight Coastal League Championships and eleven consecutive San Diego CIF Section Championships. Horizon returns their top two starters and five other lettermen. The starters include all-area selections junior center Jeff Withey (7’0) and senior guard Marquise Carter (6’4). As a sophomore, Withey averaged 12 points, 12 rebounds, and 5 blocks per game and is ranked as one of the nation’s best underclassmen centers. Coach Tony Martin is set to begin his 19th year coaching basketball and his second season as head varsity coach at the John Carroll School. Previously, as head coach at Archbishop Spalding, he took the Cavaliers program from relative obscurity to national prominence in just three years. The 2006-2007 Patriot boys’ basketball team will be an exciting combination of youth and experience. The team returns all twelve players from last season including 7’3 junior center Jacob Kusmieruk. Coming off a 15 win campaign, the Patriots are looking to take the next step. The website MidAtlanticHoops.com, which covers the DC, MD, and northern VA areas, has the Patriots ranked in their pre-season Top 25 poll.

The 2005-2006 basketball season was a highly successful one (24 wins, 7 losses) for the Mustangs of Meadowcreek High School. The Mustangs won their Region Championship and advanced to the Elite Eight of the Georgia Class 5A State Playoffs. Expectations for the 2006-2007 season are again running high. Meadowcreek returns four starters from last year’s team including Michigan State bound guard Chris Allen. The Mustangs are coached by Billy Davis who has a twenty three year record of 483 wins and 184 losses.

Chris is a 6’4 senior guard who averaged 26 points and 7.5 rebounds per game during the 2005-2006 basketball season. He is listed as the #9 rated senior shooting guard in the nation by Scout.com. Chris has committed to play college basketball next year at Michigan State University.

New Hanover High School finished last season as North Carolina’s Mideastern Conference Champions for the 4th consecutive year with a final record of 28 wins and only 2 losses that included a trip to the Class 4A Final Four. The Wildcats return two starters and three other lettermen from last years team highlighted by 6’2 guard James Beatty and 6’11 junior center Ty Walker. Both Beatty and Walker are receiving serious interest from Division I Universities. New Hanover is coached by Linc Lyles who in 9 years as head coach has led his teams to six conference championships.

The Knights of Charlotte Christian are coached by Shonn Brown. The Knights return this year as the Chick-fil-A Classic I defending champions. Last years team won the title by defeating nationally ranked and undefeated Norcross High School (GA). Charlotte Christian finished the 2005-2006 season as the North Carolina Independent Schools Class 3A State Runners-up with a record of 33 wins and only 3 losses. The team returns three starters and six other lettermen including all-conference players Omar Carter (Sr), and Damier Pitts (Jr). The Knights are expecting another highly successful season.

The Trojans of Ribault High School finished the 2005-2006 basketball season with a record of 24 wins and 7 losses. Ribault won their Conference Championship and made it to the Florida Class 3A Final Four for the second consecutive season. The 2006-2007 Trojans return two starters and 5 other lettermen from last season including all-state forward Christopher Summers. Coach Anthony Flynn returns to Ribault and will be taking over the reins as head coach for the team in 2006-2007. Coach Flynn was an assistant to legendary Ribault Coach Bernard Wilkes (758 wins-2nd all-time in Florida) for 9 seasons before taking his first head job at First Coast High School three years ago. During his three seasons at First Coast, Coach Flynn amassed a record of 49 wins and 22 losses including this past season’s record of 23 wins and 6 losses. He led First Coast to their first ever Gateway Conference Championship this past season.

Dunwoody High School is the Georgia Class 3A two-time defending State Champions. The Wildcats finished their 2005-2006 title run with a record of 27 wins and 6 losses. Over the last three years, the Wildcats have a combined 83 wins and only 12 losses including a 2003-2004 campaign of 29-1 and a 2004-2005 campaign of 27-5. This year’s team again has high expectations with the return of 3 starters and four other lettermen from last season. All-Region selections Zac Swansey, Delwan Graham, and Pierre Jordan are again expected to lead the way for Dunwoody. All three are college basketball prospects. Pierre Jordan has committed to Clemson University. Dunwoody is coached by Scott Bracco who was named Georgia Class 3A Coach of the Year in 2004-2005. He is entering his 7th season as the coach of the Wildcats.

After finishing as region runners-up the past two seasons, the Gamecocks claimed the Region VI Championship and made it to the Final Four of the Class 4A State Playoffs. Sumter returns three starters in Derrick Hastie, Sean Whetsel, and Dontae Middleton along with four other lettermen. The team and coaching staff is excited about the prospects for this year’s team. The Gamecocks are coached by Nathan Livesay who enters his 4th season with a record of 56 wins and 23 losses.

Coach Jason Powell begins his 5th year as head coach of the Cavaliers. This year's team is expected to be in a rebuilding year mode with the return of only 3 lettermen and 1 starter off a team that went 19-7 and advanced to the 2nd round of the Class 4A state playoffs. Last season marked the 12th straight season that Richland Northeast has qualified for the 4A State Playoffs and the 12th consecutive season that Richland Northeast has advanced past the 1st round. The Cavaliers will be depending heavily on senior forward LaBrandon Carmichael and junior forward Chris Streater to lead the Cavaliers back to the playoffs again.

LaBrandon is a 6'4 senior forward who averaged 4 points and 4.5 rebounds during the 2005-2006 season. In only his second season of playing organized basketball, LaBrandon cracked the starting lineup on one of the state’s top ranked teams last season.

The Irmo High School Yellow Jackets enter the 2006-07 season with a very proud basketball tradition. During the twenty-five year tenure of Coach Tim Whipple, Irmo has won 467 games, averaging nearly 19 wins a season. During that time, the Yellow Jackets have won three Class 4A State Championship titles, finished State Runner-Up three times and have made the state playoffs twenty-two times. Irmo will return 9 of their top10 players, including all five starters, from a team that finished with 16 wins and 9 losses. Seniors Joe Ben Watson, Myron Rogers, Anton Greer and Sam Dotson; along with Junior Yari King and Sophomore Robbie Brunson were able to lay a great foundation for this year. Hopes are high that this is the group that will enable Irmo to return to the enormous success of the past.

Joe Ben Watson
Joe Ben Watson is a 6’3” senior all-purpose player. He averaged 10 points, 4 assists, 3 rebounds and 2 steals a game for the 2005-06 season. He ranks in the top ten for the Yellow Jackets in career assists, steals and 3-point shots made. He was selected Most Valuable Player for Irmo and to the All-Region Team. Joe Ben is a very special basketball player but, he also excels in the classroom, carrying a 4.0 grade point average.

The Diamond Hornets of Lower Richland High School completed another highly successful season last year with a final record of 24 wins and only 3 losses. Lower Richland also won their third consecutive region title and advanced to the third round of the Class 4A State Playoffs. The Diamond Hornets are expected to be led by returning starters Rahawn Brailsford and Curtis Burton along with help from 5 other returning lettermen. Coach Chip Atkins is beginning his 37th year as a head coach and has won 616 games which is 3rd all-time in South Carolina. In 2004-2005, Coach Atkins was named National Basketball Coach of the Year.

The Raiders of W.J. Keenan High School finished the 2005-2006 basketball season with a record of 21 wins and 7 losses. The Raiders are coached by Zach Norris. In Coach Norris seven years at Keenan, the Raiders have won 20 or more games each year including back to back Class 3A State Championships his first two seasons. Beginning his 22nd season as a head coach, Coach Norris has a record of 397 wins and 134 losses. Keenan returns three starters and five other lettermen from last season’s team that made it to the Class 2A Final Four for the second consecutive year and is expected to again challenge for the State Championship. The Raiders will be led by Brandon Woodard, Rodrick Cannon, and Calvin Davis II.

The Skyhawks of the Hammond School finished last year with a record of 19 wins and 9 losses and made it to the SCISA state tournament quarterfinals. This year’s team returns their top scorer (Daniel Bailey) who was named to the All-Region, All-Area, and All-State teams. Hammond returns 6 of their top 9 players from last season and have a total of 10 returning lettermen. The Skyhawks are coached by Jimmy Braddock. Coach Braddock, former UNC basketball player and member of the 1982 National Championship team, has been the head coach at Hammond for the past nine seasons. During his tenure at Hammond, he has a record of 147 wins and 89 losses and won the SCISA Class 3A State Championship in 1999.

The Pinewood Prep Panthers finished the 2005-2006 basketball season with an overall record of 29 wins and 2 losses while clinching the SCISA Class 3A State Championship. Expectations are again high as Pinewood returns 3 starters and 7 other lettermen for the 2006-2007 season. The Panthers are expected to be led by Milton Jennings, Ryan Steed, and Jay Williams. The Panthers are coached by Pat Eidson who is beginning his 17th year at Pinewood (28th overall as head coach). Coach Eidson has led the Panthers to seven state championship titles and five state runner-up finishes during his tenure. Coach Edison has an overall head coaching record of 565 wins and 236 losses.

Milton Jennings
Milton is a 6’8 sophomore forward/center who averaged 14 points, 9 rebounds, and 4 blocks per game during the 2005-2006 season. He was selected to the All-Region team, All-Tournament team at the state championships, and was named Freshman of the Year in South Carolina.
